In June I facilitated segments of a retreat at Bjorklund in Baileys Harbor WI hosted by Wisconsin Private College Career Counselors WIPCCC. WOW what a great group of individuals. I have always found educators wonderful to work with and this group was not an exception. They were warm, welcoming, open and enthusiastic. The retreat focus was Sustainability Planning for Our Future and my role as an Intuitive Business and Performance Coach was to stimulate and promote Mindfulness as an avenue to Personal Sustainability.
I shared the following life story with the group as I welcomed them to Door County, my home for over a decade. In 1999 my husband and I made what we then referred to as a lifestyle choice and packed up and moved from Colorado where we were then living to Door County, WI.
The decision scenario went something like this…It was a cold and rainy Sunday afternoon and we had decided to “talk about” what we wanted to do next …….he opened the discussion by saying “where we are and what we are doing is not working for me”.
I said-“well technically we can live wherever we want so where would it be. HMMM
I see us living In the woods near the water do you know anyplace like that
He said Door County Wisconsin. Within 2 months of that conversation we both had jobs and were moving half way across the country from Colorado to Wisconsin. The Universe immediately began to put the people places and things in motion to make it happen.
It was a personal sustainability choice. Although we did not call it that at the time, what we called it was crazy. But, it was an idea conceived out of mindful deliberation for the express purpose of “feeding our souls”.
Sustainability starts at a personal level with how we treat ourselves and how we sustain our relationship to “source” energy.
A personal sustainability plan begins by looking at all the areas of your life; you notice what is working and what behaviors need to be changed or eliminated. By increasing awareness and bringing mindfulness and visibility to the areas that are stuck or need improvement you can develop a plan for living that is consistent with your values and lifestyle.
Some areas are easier to work on than others but over time change is possible in any area you bring into consciousness. The plan originates with a commitment to what you want personally and then what you want for and in your world. Once you know what it is you want -then you can mindfully take action that is in alignment with your desires and expresses and extends your commitment to the world at large.
Frustration can set in if you start by taking the action before clarifying your true goals or vision and the new practice is not long lasting enough to become a habit.
The key is to allow mindful intention to dictate the action, the action will in turn create the results.
The Law of Attraction at work. Action follows thought.
A personal sustainability plan becomes part of your journey: you never get it done. .
The retreat was about igniting the creative spark of realization that a personal sustainability plan is about making and sustaining changes in your life that you can be mindful, inspired and passionate about.
Your actions then become the expression of your plan in daily life.
As an Intuitive Business Coach one of the key areas I work with clients on is authenticity. I help people discover how to live their life authentically. One of the first steps in the sustainability process is to recognize your ability to make healthy choices in your life that are right for you and then extend those choices to include what is right for your world.
We must recognize and acknowledge that personal sustainability begins with our desire to live fully in the present and not compromise the future. It starts with how we treat ourselves and how we sustain our relationship with “source”. As part of understanding the personal sustainability process in this retreat we worked on uncovering our intuitive selves and recognizing how we know what we know.
The retreat was fun and engaging and I thoroughly enjoyed working with these private college career counselors. I found them to be curious and committed to opening up to their intuitive understanding and embracing a new thought paradigm around personal sustainability.
